A Word of Caution and Open Letter to Call Center Fellows:
This post is a caution and reminder to all those mighty Call Center Pips out there.
Having worked in a Call Center for 10 years, I can honestly tell the health risks identified with the industry.
I know very well how stressful it could be working in a graveyard shift and worse the schedules at times go crazy (yung shifting scheds na tinatawag)
10 years is a long time and I can attest that working in a BPO industry, whilst it has relatively higher pay than most jobs, it is at the cost of the employees’ health in the process.
Call Center employees especially those who work at night shifts or graveyard schedules are exposing themselves to health issues like eye problems, changes in sleeping pattern and many many more.
Madalas sinasabi na iba talaga and tulog sa gabi. This is a true statement, but probably many do not know why.
Eto po un mighty call center pips — physiologically at night time the human brain releases a very powerful anti-oxidant called melatonin to rejuvenate the body. This anti-oxidant is released when humans have fallen asleep.
Since those who are working at the graveyard shift are awake at those times, the brain cannot release this anti-oxidant. And the body has to cope with the night shift work. Our bodies are naturally designed to rest and sleep at night and not to work.
Working at night signals the brain to be more active when it is not supposed to. Hence such hinders the brain from releasing the powerful anti-oxidant which is very much needed by the body to repair itself daily.
Another thing that many might not have realized — Call Center Pips are exposed to radiation coming from computer monitors everyday.
Let me tell you why this is so unhealthy:
In an experiment conducted by a doctor upon herself, she took a blood sample of her own without being exposed to a computer monitor and put the sample under a microscope — what she saw was that her blood cells were in a normal formation.
But when she exposed herself to a computer for 70 minutes and put her own blood sample under the microscope, the blood cells were in a clumped formation — Rouleaux formation.
This is the formation of blood cells found in cancer patients.
Imagine that is just for one hour and ten minutes, how much unhealthy it can be if it’s 7.5 hours or more kung may mandatory OT pa!If its 7.5 hours a day, ilang oras yan in a week!
The implications of these are tremendous.
While our body has the capacity to repair itself, constant exposure to radiation can have adverse effects.
Worse, computers are not the only sources of electro-magnetic radiation, but it also includes mobile phones, Wi-Fis, cell towers etc.
I feel compelled to share this because I am a fierce advocate against electromagnetic radiation to which we are exposed everyday. Literally we are bathing in an ocean of radiation everyday.
By the way, ang tawag ko po sa mga empleyado sa Call Center ay Mighty Call Center Pips kasi they contribute so much to the Philippine economy. If my figures are correct, the Call Center
Industry contributes over 100 Billion Pesos annually to Philippine economy — that’s a lot of money.
Ang mga taga call centre ay hindi lang mighty, sila po ay mga imortal. Even if it is raining so hard they come to work at the expense of their safety and health.
Kahit bumabaha na, pinipilit parin ni TL or Sup na pumasok si agent. Naranasan ko na po sumakay ng bangka sa binabahang daan para makapasok lang. (Ang mahal pa naman ng bayad, 40 pesos yun and that was year 2007)
Eto pa, kung walang Medcert tapos absent si agent, invalid ung absence and NTE or memo na. Minsan pag over-break or over lunch for a minute or two, NTE or Memo na. Pwede din ma-terminate.
Mighty Call Center Pips, working in this type of environment truly has health risks kaya doble ingat sa katawan and protect yourselves from electromagnetic radiation and overall live healthy please. Dun sa mga nag yoyosi — wag na tayong magyosi please. Alam naman natin di healthy yan.
Let us always bear in mind that when are working, our health is of prime importance kasi madaming umaasa sa atin, mga pamilya natin, mga anak, mga kaibigan. At malaki ang contribution natin sa ekonomiya ng Pilipinas!
Mabuhay ang mga Mighty Call Center Pips!
Yours very truly,
